Certification Watch (Vol. 21, No. 20)

In this week's roundup of the latest IT certification news, ISACA has a few words to say about net neutrality, there's a new Certification Magazine survey for IT support specialists, and more.

ISACA Blogger Recaps Challenges of Net Neutrality Knockdown

Net neutrality gets a stay of execution, but repeal is coming.Earlier today Democrats in the United States Senate jumped in front of the metaphorical bus hurtling toward a full repeal (as of June 11) of the net neutrality rules instated by the Federal Communications Commission in 2015. Aided by three key Republican defections, Democratic senators voted to reinstate the rules recently lifted by FCC Chairman Ajit Pai. With the House of Representatives and President Donald Trump still needing to approve the Senate's action for it to become the law of the land, well, you could say that net neutrality has managed a stay of execution, but a full pardon still doesn't seem likely. So we all need to brace for potential changes, some of which are outlined in a Friday (May 11) post to the ISACA Now Blog of security and governance association ISACA. Guest blogger Marty Puranik walks through the basics of neutrality and then dives into all of the feared complications — throttling, blocking, paid prioritization, cross-subsidization, redirection — that could result from its repeal. If the whole kerfuffle still doesn't quite add up for you, then this is an excellent place to turn to make sense of it all.

CompTIA: Keep Your Options Open with Certification

One of the many benefits of certification is that adding a professional credential to your résumé often increases your employment options. But getting a certification can also open up entire career paths — not just job opportunities — that may have been off the radar. A new post this week to the IT Career News blog of tech industry association CompTIA illustrates the point using CompTIA's recently refreshed Network+ certification. Network+ is a foundational credential, but blogger Anthony Sequeira says that's a good thing. As Sequeria sees it, the "beauty" of Network+ is that its "broad" coverage gives learners a taste of many different career ppssibilities. There are quite a few different directions that an ambitious networking novice could choose to go in using Network+ as a springboard. It's a welcome reminder that many, if not most, IT certifications aren't the end of your learning journey at all. Certification continually opens up new paths to follow in your pursuit of knowledge and actionable IT skills.

Cisco: Certification Lets You Make the Most of Your IT Skills

It's been a couple of months since training provider Global Knowledge released its 2017 IT Skills and Salary Report, the ouput of an annual survey of certified professionals and IT business leaders, but the repercussions are still being felt. Over at Cisco Learning Network's Talking Tech with Cisco blog, blogger Linda Boroff sorts through some of the implications of the report and finds a lot of good news for skilled IT professionals. For example, 94 percent of the IT decision makers questioned by the survey report that employees with IT certifications "added value above and beyond the cost of certification." And if you're in the mood to follow the (IT) crowd, then it may intrigue you to know what 84 percent of skilled professionals questioned by the survey indicated that they completed some form of training in the past year.
